Sameena Ahmed does such a breathtaking performance - for me, she is what makes this film so palpably real and tense, to the very last moment. The open ending leaves you hanging in the dark for the minute or two before you see the credits rolling. And "Land" playing, as they danced in a brief moment of innocence, foreshadowing the horror through Patti Smith's lyrics.
Truly gripping film. The Daniels don't give all the answers. Some words said by the characters partly lift the veil, but the mystery is what makes this film so tense. Some may find the questions the conclusion leaves untouched should've been answered. But when you think about it, it's a conclusion with more answers than the eye alone can see.
Initially threatening its stoned stupor with a violence that feels justified by the juxtapose of style and miserabilism, it then takes a little adjusting to register this as a tense as hell chase film. And then again as a punishing drama that wants commentary and genre. Reminds me of films I liked as a teen like 'London to Brighton' but I'm out of the market. Stylish, but cheap subject + pay-off, no takeaways.

A far cry from the "modern Western" the filmmakers pompously describe, but it was not wholly disappointing. The cinematography was the high point, and the original score was haunting. Performances were great, Gary and Barry in particular, while most characters were so reprehensible you didn't care an iota whether they lived or died. Stark and bleak, without compassion - a hip, juvenile take on a serious issue.
Nothing good came of this film. Scaremongering Daily Mail readers & glorifying Patti Smith to a girl who culturally (be it Pakistani or English) wouldn't AT ALL be listening to her. Bleakly depicting the north of England with a Dazed & Confused mag filter worked (although too much in vogue) but the film, if you're accustomed to UK exploitation cinema was predictable & arched towards Shane Meadows' territory. Nasty. D
Some good, if derivative UK social realism photography, and good performances by daughter and father. It's technically skilled, with a good grasp of fugitive thriller forms, but rams in a simple, exploitative storyline about honour killings that though compelling in its awfulness, is also without any compassion or understanding, and basically caters to every prejudice in the wider culture about Asian men.
