My favourite French film is Marcel Carne's "The Children of Paradise" (1945) which I find more satisfying than any of the New Wave films that followed later. Not only is the film well made but one will appreciate it even further if one realizes the conditions under which the film was made. I hate that on the Criterion DVD there is an introduction by Terry Gilliam. Why do I care what he has to say about this movie? But mostly, why do I care right before I see the movie? Who is he to get that honor? Grrrrr. This is easily one of my favorite films and I am always trying to get friends to watch it but they will not. They borrow it and return it saying that they hadn't the time.
