I think this is a triumph in the found footage/sci-fi genre. It could have so easily taken corny routes, but never does, and not only gives what I feel is a realistic portrayal of what teenagers would actually do with such power, but also what a teenager from an abusive home would.
Another sci-fi blockbuster 'found footage' premise that utilises the canon for some pertinent characterisation of 'masculinity in crisis' adolescents (one with hubris worthy of a Greek tragedy). No matter how contrived, its pathos, and the haunting uncanny realism in the depiction of sci-fi elements, takes this noble effort out of the mediocre.
Depending on how you see this, you will give it more or less latitude. It is a very good teenage movie. I'm not sure it tries to be more than that. It wouldn't be a great sci-fi film. The hand-held camera, documentary done by one of the characters style is not a plus. And there would be nothing wrong if the approach was simply Teenage Heroes, or Growing Up (pun intended). It has some nice moments. Fun enough, though.
FIRSTLY, i watched the movie for dane dehaan. the filming and the characters are weird. the only thing i liked is that although it's a movie with superpowers they're not treated like they're usually treated in american movies, in such grandeur. why am i even writing a review, it's a bad movie, a weird kind of bad. dehaan tho
