The bleak injustice catches in your throat. Balagov's debut is an unpleasant watch filled with people just trying their best but whose actions end up hurting one another in irrevocable ways. Zhovner's big sorrowful eyes acting as a window to incredible suffering. But it's the centrepiece that lingers; documentary footage of real unbearable violence. I had to look away. Not sure the film needs or earns the horror.
