This floored me. I had no expectations, and it delivered hard.

  2. smndvdcl's rating of the film Cold in July

The late, great Sam Shepard, who lit up theatre and cinema, rest in peace. Another sterling performance in a weighty drama here.

  5. Luca Soldati's rating of the film Cold in July

Bel contesto disagiato e corrotto. Grandissimi i personaggi.

  7. dave gunn's rating of the film Cold in July

The plot kept twisting, which was refreshing, but remained thin from the get-go. However, the '80s backdrop, a sick synth score, and decent acting kept me watching to see what would happen next.

  8. Matt's rating of the film Cold in July

I hate to be that guy, but, what the hell? The book is better.

  9. HKFanatic's rating of the film Cold in July

"Cold in July" unfolds like a Texas-fried take on the small town revenge of "Blue Ruin," with a nostalgia-fueled Eighties synth score a la "It Follows." Director Jim Mickle, who previously delivered the fun but ultimately forgettable "Stake Land," announces himself as a filmmaker to watch with this stylishly-shot and damn well-acted slice of neo-noir, one that remains unpredictable to the last violent shotgun blast.

For those with a serious 'Blood Simple' jones, this is for you. Plus, a badass soundtrack to boot

  13. Danny Southern's rating of the film Cold in July

    3,5/5 I appreciated the B movie fetishism...and that score.

  14. Addy K.'s rating of the film Cold in July

Sam Shepard adds somber elegance to what is essentially a throwback to John Carpenter and pulpy 80s horror thrillers (note: the film's events takes place in 1989). Jim Mickle and d.p. Ryan Samul really crank up the atmosphere and mood with noir furnishings. But there's an exaggerated restraint to the whole thing; a faux Clint Eastwood-ism. Being "a man" in America means killing bad guys while remaining monosyllabic.

  15. Federico Di Folco's rating of the film Cold in July

Ottimo.

  16. Fabio Di Felice's rating of the film Cold in July

  17. Jack Marsden's rating of the film Cold in July

If you read down the plot and genres within this standard length indie thriller, you might think it's going to be the audiovisual equivalent to the broken jazz of Charles Mingus, but all the segues are smooth Miles Davis. Also, Charles Mingus was once with 26 prostitutes in a single sitting. Allegedly. 3.5/5

  18. VIOLHAINE LARSEN's rating of the film Cold in July

An artsy thriller loaded with beautiful lights, scenery and shots, a movie crowded with different emotions. Yet, where the characters are going and why they act like they do is sometimes a mystery. Maybe one should read the novel.

  19. Marco Pierrard's rating of the film Cold in July

so close to punching that 4th star. this is damn fine genre filmmaking.

  21. Tendoza's rating of the film Cold in July

Maybe the most nightmarish film I've experienced in a while. Its plot is so increasingly strange, it appears to function on a kind of dream logic, picking up and dropping characters and plotlines on a whim. I understand why this film would inspire indifference, but it thoroughly freaked me out.

  22. Carl Penguin's rating of the film Cold in July

too many plot holes, but still a good action movie.

  23. Jack Hoehn's rating of the film Cold in July

  24. CinemaDead's rating of the film Cold in July

Great beginning and end but the middle slows the film.
