Not as gritty or intense as I was hoping for. The material is ripe for Hopper but the whole film feels sedated. The performances by Penn and Duvall are brilliant and elevate the film. The gangsters are largely miscast and unreflective or real life. While this may have been groundbreaking in the 80s, it's soft by today's standards. For it's time, Colors is a good film with excellent moments but has nothing remarkable.
