Colour Flight

Directed by Len Lye
United Kingdom, 1937
Avant-Garde, Animation, Short

Synopsis

This riot of color was a showcase for Lye’s hand-painted and stenciled imagery. Sponsored by Imperial Airways, it incorporates the airline’s “speedbird” symbol, and the music consists of “Honolulu Blues” by Red Nichols and a rumba by the Lecuona Cuban Boys.

  • filmcapsule's rating of the film Colour Flight

Yet another fantastic and playful hand-painted film from Len Lye. Compared to A Colour Box, this film begins to integrate more legible shapes and patterns into Len Lye's visual style, riffing on themes of flight, ascent and verticality. These representative shapes are subtle, though, and not an intrusion into the color-magic he creates, which makes me prize his films above those of Norman McLaren.
