Crichton's thriller may not be quite China Syndrome level paranoia and cover up, but it maintains a feeling of dread and mounting tension throughout. This was made right around when Star Wars would change American cinema for the worse. I love these simple films from Hollywood's last golden period. Douglas and Bujold are great together, Widmark provides great support, as he did throughout his long career. 4 stars.
Solid thriller starts out as an engrossing medical mystery, and even though it does loose some edge as it becomes a more conventional suspense thriller, it simply but effectively retains a tense atmosphere of mounting dread. Some of the plot twists are fairly, and Crichton's stolid direction misses out on opportunities for stronger tension, but a strong cast and a fast-paced story make for a compelling film.
