Alan J. Pakula is an American director a little forgotten nowadays although he directed a few movies that will stay in Movie history. 'Comes a Horseman' is a western set in the early 1940's in Montana. Only an old car and an airplane remind us that the film is not set in the 19th century. Jane Fonda sold the only clock of her house so that Pakula can easily convince us that the film main themes are still relevant.
Comes a Horseman is a deliberately paced western that's appealing for its fine aestheticism and its blue-collar, grassroots progressive values. With its strong sociopolitical point of view, respect for working class America, its complex characters, its finely honed performances (MVP Richard Farnsworth), and its beautiful cinematography courtesy of legend Gordon Willis, Alan J. Pakula's western is an unsung gem.
A big cattle baron is threatening neighbouring small ranchers who are struggling to survive economically. In case they go bankrupt, he will take over their land. A story about greed, proudness, crime and love. Overall great cast. Beautiful pictures. However, the end of the story is predictable. Solid.
