Salinger obsessions for outsiders are a fairly universal phenomena. This humane story highlights how the journey of a dysfunctional adolescent is not necessarily doomed into ignominy. The protagonist's realisation that one does not need to submit to 'the tortured artist' paradigm (in order to transcend in the creative process) may only be a mild epiphany, but an important one nonetheless.
