This is still my favorite Arnold Schwarzenegger guilty pleasure. It is full of fantastic political incorrect moments, especially Arnie's interrogation of a bad guy over a cliff always make me crack up in laughter every time I see it. This is without doubt the best one-man slaughter machine action movie with a ton of great over-the-top cartoon villains and political incorrect jokes.
A completely nonsensical movie that cares less about plot and more about letting Arnie flex his sweaty muscles and dispose bad guys with corny one liners and wide variety of weapons. What this movie lacks in coherence and logic it makes up for in sheer crazyness and fun.
People always laugh at the "Eye eet Green Berets for brackfaast - and raight nauw I'm very hunree!" bit, but forget the line right after: "What is it with this macho bullshit?!" That self-awareness, embracing stereotypes and sending them up at the same time, is precisely why you've seen it, and will probably see it again.
I like the sense of unbridled brutality in that film. John Matrix (what a name, btw) deliberately kills and doesn't leave his weaker opponents only wounded. The abduction of his daughter brings him back to the world of mindless violence he was once part of, and you have the feeling that throughout his vengeful quest, he's thoroughly loving this violence. And a great score from the usually overrated James Horner.
Time to sink my film profs into a deep depression. Vulgar auteurists, take heed -- this is the epitome of progressive action-movie self-awareness. Unsubtle homoerotic subtext aplenty. The African-American female lead, never depicted as a love interest, shoots down a prison transport truck with a bazooka and flies the hero to safety on a seaplane. The kidnapped daughter escapes on her own. "I LIED." Dead. Bliss.
