White Pat Conroy was born and raised in Beaufort, South Carolina. In March, 1969 under the Beaufort School District, he starts a job teaching at a small poor school located on Daufuskie Island, an island in a South Carolina river delta, the island accessible only by boat.

1970's NEW HOLLYWOOD. Great story, great film making and great performances from everyone in this, including all the kids who play the students on a remote Gullah island off the So. Carolina coast. based on Pat Conroy's 1972 autobiographical book The Water Is Wide starring Jon Voight, Paul Winfield, Madge Sinclair, Hume Cronyn and Antonio Fargas, Conrack follows Voight's Pat Conroy assigned in 1969 to a two-room schoolhouse on isolated Yamacraw Island off the coast of South Carolina populated mostly by poor black Gullah-speaking families, "Conrack" being the best the pupils can do to pronounce his last name.
