  • El Biffo's rating of the film Conrack

1970's NEW HOLLYWOOD. Great story, great film making and great performances from everyone in this, including all the kids who play the students on a remote Gullah island off the So. Carolina coast. I saw this 41 years ago and loved it so much, I read the book, too-also great. Here's a link :-) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e2cmoAl0haI

  • 849025's rating of the film Conrack

based on Pat Conroy's 1972 autobiographical book The Water Is Wide starring Jon Voight, Paul Winfield, Madge Sinclair, Hume Cronyn and Antonio Fargas, Conrack follows Voight's Pat Conroy assigned in 1969 to a two-room schoolhouse on isolated Yamacraw Island off the coast of South Carolina populated mostly by poor black Gullah-speaking families, "Conrack" being the best the pupils can do to pronounce his last name.
