This movie should have been titled Goodfellas part 2 - When you have a cast like De Niro,Kietel,Riotta,Stallone and a buch of actors from Sopranos. The performances lifts the film beyond the plot especially Stallone who uses his acting abilities more than his biceps - he is more like your neighbour than your local sheriff but that makes his character totally believable. This could have been a western but its not.
It's as if assembling a dream team of Scorsese alums was supposed to naturally, effortlessly percolate into a great film. Instead, it quietly reminds us that Stallone is actually a decent actor, beyond the beefcake roles. Freddy's forlorn gaze at the NYC cops who dismiss him seems to mirror an actor's yearning to be taken seriously, to be given a chance. The story is weak but Sly does good.
