This film portrays the different pressures a girl growing up can face. Marta, has to deal with the insults of her older sister and the stress of her confirmation and the people in charge (the priest and the instructor) Cinematography was excellent and this film had a distinct grainy touch.
In watching this movie I could not help but think of Jess & Moss, especially the abandoned church with children pretending to be religious and the abandoned church in this film, the vacuous world best symbolized by the near crash that sends Jesus into the river, an event caused by a nuncupative truth that the priest takes the wrong way. I take from these realistict films that kids are resilient, if they are not!
While religious rituals and a sculpture of Jesus are common sense, per se, to the priest and the churches followers, in the eyes and hands of Marta they merely depict a contradiction of identity and morals. The scene with her cleaning the body of Jesus on a cross is almost sexual.
