An alcoholic country music singer who, through his relationship and experiences with a female reporter, is able to get his life and career back on track and becomes the mentor of a contemporary country star at the peak of his career, while struggling in the younger star’s shadow.
This film is not currently playing on MUBI but 30 other great films are. See what’s now showing
Darren Aronofsky's The Wrestler minus the wrestling, raw emotions, smart direction, and quality acting. Instead all of that is replaced with a guitar, faux emotions, bland direction, and sub par acting- YUCK!
The slow pace and unlikable characters killed this one for me. Jeff Bridges was believable as a disgusting has been drunk, but he over played disgusting and I couldn't care less about him or this movie. Maggie Gyllenhaal never was believable or shared any chemistry with Bridges. The country music written for this film was as dull as the movie.
A terrific character study from Jeff Bridges,in which he gets inside the skin of Bad Blake.Even the songs fit him perfectly.
I would have preferred more of Colin Farrell who,in a small role, makes us understand Blake more.
The only real minus in this film is the unconvincing love story.Makes me wonder if the cute kid storyline was to bring women into the cinema.
4,5 rate. I watched this movie and I thounght it wasn't nothing so special. Then I slept over a night and it remain in my mind the day after. So I realize it is a story about redemption, music and talent, well played and - ok, protagonist is the "ex Lebowsky"!- I understood beacuse he got an Oscar. And probably in the future I will watch it again...
