Ratings & Reviews

  1. Jesse Furgurson's rating of the film Cry of Jazz

The dissonance between the hokey educational film style and the heady, thorny argument it's making is kind of astonishing. And hilarious: "Well, then you must be pretty dumb."

  2. Brotherdeacon's rating of the film Cry of Jazz

A remarkable film which begins a debate on Jazz and Race which seems to never reach a saturation point. Some characters are more than a little stereotypical, however this enters into the filmic arguments as well. Is jazz a black idiomatic, historical music which demands a certain racial dialectic from its listeners; or do universal sonic definitions apply to jazz regardless of its progenitors? Sure to upset some.
