Zombie splatter movie made by people who genuinely love the genre done in a country where this type of film has been neglected has to be cherished for even been made. It is filled with some absurd and over-the-top gore sequences and also several disgusting tasteless scenes including a dirty love scene. Snow and blood mix great together. Excellent soundtrack consisting of Norwegian rock classics.
Boy, Wirkola loves playing with guts, doesn't he? Anyway, the plot is logical, the characters are likable and the gore is well done, so it succeeds in what it's going for. However, having watched the sequel before this one, I miss its deadpan humor, suiting to such a ludicrous story.
After the inspired and hilarious pre-credit sequence using 'In The Hall of The Mountain King', it's disappointing how safe and uninteresting the rest of the film is. Like a lot of post-Millennium horror cinema, it's a solid movie but merely a regurgitation of horror conventions and references which never braves its own path of gore or kicks the viewer in the genitals.
