Underrated. The only film directed by the Group Theater's Harold Clurman (and an uncredited William Cameron Menzies!). Susan Hayward is in her red hot sexy phase here. With her lush chestnut hair piled on top, you can better watch her provocative, hopping walk and listen to her deep voice speak Clifford Odets' odd, touching urban poetry. Great cast including Paul Lukas, Bill Williams, Joseph Calleia and Lola Lane.
Based on a novel by William Irish and written by Clifford Odets. Great dialogues, a superb performance by Susan Hayward, Marvin Miller as a blind piano player chainsmoking cigars, an atmosphere à la Fredric Brown. A little wonder deserving to be rediscovered. Highly recommended.
