What a brilliant opening scene! We’ll forgive the strutting eighties music and neo-noir Venetian blind shadows. This is a film besotted with movie-ness and wallowing in plot contrivance, but it’s also perverse, haunted and romantic.
+ And then Macha Méril shows up with 5 minutes left?! <3 Rewind-> I knew little about this film except her, Isabelle Adjani, and Stéphane Audran appear, plenty reason to investigate. Expecting a mediocre French thriller, this slapstick detective quickly (d)evolves into an all out rabbit hole cinematic explosion. It's everything, far too much, and all for the better. Recommended for a holiday, or blizzard such as *now
Elmore Leonard-ish. How often do you think of a Preminger noir, an 80s splatter movie, and Inspector Clouseau during the same film...the back and forth between bloody violence and slapstick really shouldn’t work for me, but it does.
Superbe Michel Serrault dans une magistrale interprétation entre incertaine passion refoulée, indicible transfert équivoque et folle tendresse ambiguë, qui à nouveau nous séduit et nous contente durablement... www.cinefiches.com
