Ratings & Reviews

  1. Karl J. Kipling's rating of the film Dersu Uzala

In the second half it's completely different from Kurosawa's later version. Perhaps in 1961 it was less possible to overtly criticize Soviet nature despoiling - though set in pre-Revolution days the hero is an adamantly Soviet type who maps the tundra imagining the villages and factories that will one day rest where those bothersome trees are - where the Kurosawa makes clear that Dersu is a sacrifice to civilization.
