Ratings & Reviews

  1. Chihao Tsang's rating of the film Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame

Watched this again, still pretty decent, keeps you guessing most of the way through, action scenes range from very good to a bit hacky 3.5 stars

  2. Tibulle85's rating of the film Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame

  3. Lights in the Dusk's rating of the film Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame

Hark's dedication to (intentionally) bad CGI is kind of radical in a deconstructive sense, but also a problem, denying the brilliant martial arts choreography of Sammo Hung some of its natural, visceral energy. Nonetheless, it's a remarkable film, employing a genuinely interesting murder mystery narrative, with sidelines into political conspiracy & magical realism, with the bold & expressive stylisation of the Wuxia.

  4. Daniel Iván's rating of the film Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame

Nothing to do with Sherlock Holmes in any way, unless you could substitute talent with huge amounts of absurd, fight choreography and ridicule. This film is a total waste of time. Just don't.

  5. Bonnet Michel's rating of the film Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame

  6. rllr's rating of the film Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame

The horrible CGI you have to sit through to catch a glimpse of what they call Tsui Hark's 'return to form' may not be worth your time.

  7. DUTCH's rating of the film Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame

There is a talking stag. I seriously believe your enjoyment of this film hinges on that moment.

  8. msmichel's rating of the film Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame

Never boring Tang dynasty story resulting in a strange hybrid of genres for this Tsui Hark effort. Tsui's most interesting film in years, perhaps since Time and Tide or his under-rated remake The Blade. Visually sumptious with fine work by dp Chan and excellent rendering and matte work. Performances vary but film contains a great show by Carina Lau as the empress. Andy Lau always watchable but acting here is thin.

  9. Junda Mane's rating of the film Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame

A fun return to form for Hark, the recent prequel is even better.

  10. Paolo Simeone's rating of the film Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame

mbuh, che robo strano per essere un film di Tsui Hark.

  11. Erik Gregersen's rating of the film Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame

Not at all like the great series of mystery novels by Robert van Gulik, but rather much like a Chinese version of the Guy Ritchie/Robert Downey, Jr. Sherlock Holmes movies, in which a great detective character is placed in the middle of some gigantic souped-up plot. Tsui is in great form, with fabulous vistas and flabbergasting plot points (e.g. the statue, spontaneous human combustion, and the deer).

  12. ElTigreNegro's rating of the film Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame

Hark's best film in years for sure, and a great lead role for Andy Lau. It has a bit of everything, had a lot of fun with this one.

  13. M****'s rating of the film Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame

Um so flashy and a bit difficult to follow the mythical versus the real but I guess that is that is Detective Dee's job. A bit boring.

  14. Harry Rossi's rating of the film Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame

An extremely fun and entertaining movie. I like my chinese action movies exactly like this: over the top. The scene where the main character has to fight off possessed deer makes the whole movie worth it. That being said it is truly beautifully shot with spectacular production design. Pure entertainment.

  15. pitdogG's rating of the film Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame

What a film. Beautiful in every way, camera, sets, and costume. Well acted with a distinctly western flavor. Based on the, Van Gulick novels, the film goes places they only hint at. So satisfied was I, that I went out and bought it. If you like, Chinese Historical films, you will love it. It has intrigue, action, spooky deer, a magical mace, and a very clever detective. See it and let me know what you think.

  16. El-DoX's rating of the film Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame

Una buona prova per la regia di Hark dopo qualche film non proprio al passo con le sue capacità.

  17. Xose Manoel Ramos's rating of the film Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame

Moi entretida, e resulta que os feitos históricos non están de todo inventados

  18. billy c.'s rating of the film Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame

This is in my "So bad it's fun to watch" category. Full of unintentionally comedic moments.

  19. Tigrão's rating of the film Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame

    It's a bit silly... not sure I got into it;

  20. Pierre's rating of the film Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame

    Wish there were some ghosts....

  21. Zachary Curl's rating of the film Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame

this was fun, but very needlessly convoluted.

  22. nothere's rating of the film Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame

Kind of ridiculous only in that kung-fu epic sort of way that's both serious and outrageous. The fight sequences are great but the story seemed to suffer from being a bit muddled. I guess without the historical context applied to the film, the characters played a little flat, even Detective Dee himself. Still fun though some awful CGI does hurt the film. It just looks bad and unconvincing.

  23. axsaxs's rating of the film Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame

Great fun, but has some goddamn cheesy CGI shots.

  24. Wally Zialcita's rating of the film Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame

Chinese history. No, seriously. Yes, you should see it.
