A split-screen metatheatrical monument to the power of mixing media. Schechner's loose adaptation of The Bacchae is translated to the screen with dashing aplomb by De Palma providing an experience that allows its viewers no distance from the performance space. Beautifully stark and claustrophobic - almost a reverse/converse of Brecht's alienation effect, in this sense.
An insight to the type of experimental theatre that many immersive and contemporary experimental theatre practitioners owe their respect to. A retelling of one of the most classic plays in a uniquely '60s way. Essential for any theatre buff.
