In terms of pure choreography, the finale might be the most impressive Shaw fight I've seen. Lau involves multiple combatants in different configurations and has Gordon Liu work together with Ho in a compact dance. The unlikely friendship that develops between the two is also entertaining, but certain sequences like the Tigresses lost me at times. It was probably the first time I saw a misstep in Lau's taste.
Subversive martial arts film. Wang's martial arts abilities offer physical comedy that would've been at home in the silent era. From there the film turns into a buddy movie/training montage before a battle with looney-toon characters as villains in a set-piece that could've come from LOTR. After a terrific final fight just when Ho has won, the film counteracts, closing with a joke on him. Highly entertaining gem.
