Craig Atkinson's father is a leader in the fraternal order of the police, allowing Craig privileged access. "Do Not Resist", you don't have a choice, seems to be one theme in this vapid look into increasingly hyper militarized U.S. police departments. A brutal reminder of our punitive justice system that gains power and profits while disproportionately terrorizing communities of color and those living in poverty.
It's amazing that the American Police Force use tanks, drones, and M16 to catch weed users when the real criminals - corporations CEOs who stash billions of $ overseas, hedge fund speculators, bankers - get away with murder. Atkinsons cogently shows how dysfunctional and toxic American policing has become. An essential documentary.
A loose, sweeping overview of some of the systems driving America's rapidly militarizing police force. The insider access Atkinson manages, riding with SWAT teams, sitting in on task forces, attending creepy indoctrinary training sessions, is pretty extraordinary. Which makes it a shame that, with so much powerful footage, and such high production value, he didn't weave a much tighter argument. Still, very good. 3.5
