Exquisite and enigmatic, a fable-like story told in flashbacks and flashforwards. The physical bond of the two wandering lovers symbolic of the other bonds that tie together the random people they encounter. Spectaular Japanese landscapes highlight the lovely cinematography and feel of this film.
Bleak and beautiful. This symbolically charged film on the theme of love is stark but compulsive viewing. Fatalistic it examines love as an enduring co-dependence and as mutually destructive. Not a lot of light relief but a great deal of self abnegation. There's a feast of natural and human design; colours are glorious; burning maples and tecnicolour roses and then there's also curiously apt plastic toy symbolism.
melancholic poetic masterpiece. swift quite and beautiful. a gentle brutal soul touching experience with phenomenal soundtrack and magnificent colors. truly a woven tragedy of a silent insanity, a love that devours and annihilates and ravages time, body and spirit. it takes romantic to a different level, is this love ? obsession? or total lost of sanity.
