OK, so this is trying to be Moneyball except about football, right? Problems lying therein: Reitman isn't as good as handling this sort of stuff as Miller; Joseph's dialogue isn't as sharp as Zaillian and Sorkin's, and there's no conceptual hook that's equivalent to sabremetrics.
Nothing special here unfortunately despite a game cast and an earnest script. Costner typecast here but so is Leary and Langella. Best in show besides the interesting, if not a little showy and overwhelming, editing is the supporting turns by Boesman and young Newman as the intern. Reitman plays it too safe here leaving the hitting to cast. Reasonable date flick for the boys and football fans.
