The build-up is excellent and a few tense moments are effective, but this story is also the most far-fetched Stephen King novel (and it shows on screen) full of aliens, paranoid military leaders, spiritual guides and parasites ripping themselves out through people's butt holes. Morgan Freeman who is usual reliable is terrible here with comical white eyebrows and crazed facial expressions. The book was also not good.
One of the most insane large-scale productions to come out of Hollywood this century. So stupid it's almost brilliant. Almost. It actually starts off good, but after the 30 minutes mark, from out of nowhere, the batshit takes over and it's a tailspin of crazy from there on out. How did this get made in the first place?
Revisited this for the first time since seeing it in theatres as a young'n. While I was too young to appreciate it's comical disregard for genre or establishing an appropriate tone - I remember the FX being quite good, and they were/are. It's certainly a bad movie, but it's not dull by any means - in fact, too much is being crammed in. Not King's finest, but not his worst!
I'm yet to read the novel, but this is a God-awful movie. With so many talented actors such as Freeman, Olyphant, Lewis, Jane - and based on a Stephen King novel - I was hoping for something good... or, at least, not bad. But this is very, very bad. Damian Lewis role is ridiculous. The movie is fill with facepalm moments and the whole plot and script are one big hot mess. Huge letdown.
