Ratings & Reviews

  1. Aardsy's rating of the film El Norte

The important thing is to not lose faith.

  2. CarlosEsquives's rating of the film El Norte

  3. Keren MD's rating of the film El Norte

This is a very realistic and somewhat mild in comparison to what the journey for immigrants (particularily from Guatemala) face.

  4. pyota's rating of the film El Norte

  5. Lorna Singh's rating of the film El Norte

Despite its flaws, a moving film of the hardships faced by a brother and sister from Guatemala. The acting was wooden, but may seem so because of the direction, which made the characters saintly with not much depth.

  6. Sean's rating of the film El Norte

Heartbreaking story of survival of two Guatemalan who are forced to leave their small village and make their way to America. What they find isn't what they thought it would be and struggle to battle the hardships they endure. Great acting and a superb story bring this movie to life along with good direction by Gregory Nava.

  7. Guillermo Padilla's rating of the film El Norte

Retrato de la condición humana en el sentido de la pertenencia y la supervivencia, las tradiciones, las raices, los valores en crisis por la busqueda del "sueño americano". Film que tal vez no conoceriamos sino fuera gracias a la seleccion Criterion.

  8. Paulina Richards's rating of the film El Norte

Excellent film that depicts very well a harsh reality

  9. ramosbarajas's rating of the film El Norte

The film has the utmost respect for the characters and their culture, almost in awe of them. And I have to admit that I was too. The three sections are great, even the Mexican section is too short. I mean, their journey is not there at all. In general the film is so well shot, but the focus is always the story. It is a story to which I can relate and feel a personal relation to. It's gritty but magical and beautiful.

  10. AKFilmFan's rating of the film El Norte

Touching and still relevant today, this blending of indie filmmaking and the Epic genre mixes the acting of The Bicycle Thieves with the feel of The Grapes of Wrath. The use of color and the performances by the leads are make this heartfelt story still stand out today.

  11. Mike Koo's rating of the film El Norte

A stirring and absorbing saga that is even more relevant today.

  12. Eleanor Abernathy's rating of the film El Norte

amazing how 25 year old movies are still relevant today.

  13. Dzimas's rating of the film El Norte

In many ways the movie remains as powerful today as it was in the early 1980s. It gave Americans the flip side to Reaganism, those who were willing to watch anyway. Other good films from that time were Oliver Stone's Salvador and Costa-Gavras' Missing.
