"It’s like getting cornered in an expat bar by a blowhard looking for company, except it’s a creepy motel room, and the man is a career killer." - Nicolas Rapold, Film Comment

  7. Chris Waites's rating of the film El sicario: Room 164

Powerful. Disturbing. Moving. An absolutely amazing documentary, although you should be aware that it is essentially just a man telling his story while demonstrably drawing notes in a notebook to help make sense of it all.

Categories like "good" or "bad" don't really apply here. People familiar with what's going on in the border region and what incredible suffering the people of Mexico are going through on a daily basis will hardly have any sympathies with this monster but it is fascinating to hear him talk about PTSD and religious awakening without realizing what a pathetic victim of circumstance he is.

  9. Max Seqgar's rating of the film El sicario: Room 164

Awww poor thingy. After doing all his bad, he goes to baby Jesus Savior and all is solved. Who's worse here?

  10. Clay_Carter's rating of the film El sicario: Room 164

What is most scary about this documentary is that it could be as easily a fake as it could be a truth. In the end, it doesn't matter if the man underneath the mask is actually who he says he is because the stories he retells are most certainly verbatim truths or very close to it. His words are beyond frightening. They stand out like the only tree underneath a terrible sun. Even in its shade you are scorched through.

  11. ara's rating of the film El sicario: Room 164

Unbearable to watch since it hits way too close to home. I had to pause it a lot since it's truly a painful experience. Ashamed to be from Mexico, but also ashamed to live in America. The ignorance of what's happening right under our noses, and the helpless feeling from being unable to do anything about it makes this an incredibly heavy thing to sit through and watch.Exposes a side of Mexico that everyone must know.

  12. scottirvine's rating of the film El sicario: Room 164

Spare and unsettling. Hardly riveting viewing. Its cold illustrations of calculated murder and extortion are only amplified in such close quarters with its perpetrator. Nonetheless important as an unglamorous portrayal of cartel life.

  13. Ben Loory's rating of the film El sicario: Room 164

as a film it's nothing, could be an episode of 60 minutes. but the picture the guy paints is terrifying.

  15. Mihai Cristea's rating of the film El sicario: Room 164

Porumboiu's "Police, adj." final sequence at the chalkboard is developed here into a full-length feature.

  16. Jonathan Miller's rating of the film El sicario: Room 164

Icarus Films will release this film in September, and it opens at Film Forum in NYC no 12/28/11.

If ever there was a film you'd want to be a hoax, this would be it...
