Sure, there are some problems with this film. For example, one may not like the ping-pong between the scenes shot in studio and the documentary scenes (elephants, dancers or sceneries) shot on location in Sri Lanka. I'm well aware of this. But there are still two reasons to see 'Elephant Walk': Elizabeth Taylor and the last 15 minutes of the film. A DVD zone 'I saw it on TV when I was 15 and I never forgot it'.
This "programmer" is surprisingly engrossing. The background is exotic Ceylon, now Sri Lanka, and the cast is first rate--Peter Finch, Dana Andrews and Elizabeth Taylor giving fine performances. She replaced Vivien Leigh, who is still visible in long shots. The plot is about romantic disaffection and ancestral control, plus there is an elephant stampede. All of it worth watching.
