The screaming (from the ants and the actors) was entertaining for sure but the feeble attempt at relationships/characterization was a bad idea. The "empire" part did arise until an hour into it.
my main problem with this film was the sound design used for the giant ants, which seemed to be comprised of: sine-waves, a woodpecker, and human screaming.
Is there a movie in the entire history of movies with more hysterical screaming? Half the time the screaming is coming from the ants!
I watched this movie 25 years ago. I still remember giant ants, phone booth and lot of sugar.
