Beautiful computer imagery and some memorable excellent realized moments don't help the fact that I feel like I have seen this universe numerous times before. The story about the teenager trying to fit into the world and don't get help from a uninterested father is old and the magic item and the forest figures are all characters that I have seen before.
To be brutally honest: We've seen these characters before & in better films. It had a breakneck pace that barely stops and a story that blends Avatar, Fern Gully, and various blockbusters with varying results. Though the voice performances are solid and the slugs steal the show the film misses the spark that Pixar would've given the film (though the sequences with the vacuum cleaner shows promise).
saw it with my daughter a few days ago and i liked the child friendly humor very much. one could compare epic in relation to bazin with matrix in relation to baudrillard. a lot of talk about what we can and can't see without a camera, alot of machines enhancing our viewing and our fotographic memory, everything a tad steampunkish, but then, again, an animation film, which makes everything more complicated.
