In the grand scope of cinema, this film travels a lot of ground that's been heavily covered by now (from Noël Coward to Ken Loach). But, it ultimately succeeds in the same way that Linklater's "Boyhood" succeeds: it gives you honest snapshots of the various periods, anchored by characters that (while not especially deep) feel completely real and relatable. Plus, it's just so irresistibly charming.
