Simply delightful, the Shaw Brothers' Pather Panchali. Lau always brings exciting and sophisticated entertainment, but this is endearing and emotionally involving. He commits to the love story in the first act, bathing sets and exteriors in gorgeous defuse light and stylized matte backgrounds almost reminiscent of the seductive surreality of Powell/Pressberger. The drama is studded with fights, not the reverse.

Lily Li and Kuan Tai Chen - kung fu cinema's greatest parents?

  4. ElTigreNegro's rating of the film Executioners from Shaolin

Clan of the White Lotus is basically a remake of this film, while the middle act is a bit slow everything after that is pure gold. Fantastic stuff.

  5. HKFanatic's rating of the film Executioners from Shaolin

Not one of my favorite Shaw Brothers films but it debuts the character of Pai Mei, the long-browed and nearly invincible kung fu master who would go on to appear in many other martial arts movies. Pei Mei really seemed to capture the public's imagination. He is also the source of inspiration for Gordon Liu's character in the Kill Bill movies.

  6. CJ Roy's rating of the film Executioners from Shaolin

Sexuality and masculinity in the martial arts genre. Liu Chia-Liang delivers everything you could need in his third film. Also, Pai Mei is a boss.
