Fulci wasn’t fond of this one, but his magic still occasionally shines through despite the material just not being there. A largely uneventful and piecemeal effort that still kind-of-sort-of almost works due to the maestro’s attentive hand and a daft ending. If nothing else, it’s lots of fun to see all the ways it shamelessly lifts elements from better Horror efforts like a “greatest hits” album of once fresh ideas.
A magnificent mess. Manhattan Baby is largely uneventful and the writing is entirely cryptic (e.g. "tombs are for the dead"). Even so, to me, Manhattan Baby is somehow as captivating as The Beyond or City of the Living Dead before it were. I'm partial to the suitably enigmatic soundtrack; the super-widescreen photography is implemented as effectively as one would hope too. It is hardly Fulci's worst film at any rate.
