Our take

Tsai Ming-liang headed to France for his first feature shot entirely overseas, recruiting the likes of Jean-Pierre Léaud and Jeanne Moreau for a spirited, reflexive tribute to the nouvelle vague. New faces and spaces bring fun ideas, but the formal and thematic motifs keep Face irrepressibly Tsai’s.
