Falling Star

Stella cadente

Directed by Lluís Miñarro
Spain, 2014

This colourful first fiction by renowned producer Minarro offers a quietly hallucinating take on the brief rule of Amadeo of Savoy, who was king of turbulent Spain for two years around 1870.

  • josé neves's rating of the film Falling Star

A little less pose and attitude in certain sequences and this nothing solemn perspective of the historic cinema would be far more interesting than what already is. Jum- cuts and pop songs, typical of some hype of current cinema, are dispensable, but the close-up image of a horny penis as the "origin of the world", a fun opposition to Courbet, is more iconoclastic than one might expect. An intelligent divertissement.

  • Jason's rating of the film Falling Star

There is no shortage of art these last number of years (literary, cinematic) declaring Spain at a crossroads. It was thus more than a little sophisticated for ace producer Miñarro to make his directorial debut a droll depiction of life at a previous Spanish crossroads. In it we find power and prestige doing what power and prestige do when there is nothing for power and prestige to do. Very funny movie about downtime.

  • nein's rating of the film Falling Star

I have a strange feeling this film will remain known only for the sex with a melon scene.
