  1. Karl J. Kipling's rating of the film Faryatev's Fantasies

Averbakh was brilliant with these minor-key provincial domestic dramas with everyone straining on the leash of small-town hopelessness and ennui, their dreams of flight. Faryatyev fantasizes that we're all sprung from distant ancestors from another world and that the misery run rampant on this one is due to the unconscious sense that we don't belong here. The woman he adores would be happy just getting to Odessa.
