How to cut-and-paste a compilation of "best of" Hollywood golden age moments without really doing a single spoiler or ruining the experience when seeing the original film. Instead it feels like a homage to the past with heroes, heroines and villains thrown into one big canvas as most films tend to have the same build-up and climax. A nostalgic trip down memory lane with "friends" I haven't seen for ages.
Admittedly well-made, this fast-and-furious collage/tribute to various genres (Western, thriller, horror, swashbuckler, musical among others) suffers from its ideological committment to a hegemonic concept of (US) cinema. Thus, it is virtually 'silent' on world-cinema. Irritating sounds of gunshots, mechanical functions, explosions and crashes promulgate what is noisy cinema of ideological iconography.
A little bit of insanity was all that Wildrich and his crew needed to create a kind of trip through the core of (north american) cinema. I don't know if their tecnique is charming as it could be, but, c'mon, their task was tough and the result is really interesting.
Fun, if film-schoolish, mix-and-match mash-up of cinematic tropes, deconstructed to their constituent elements, and re-animated as clumsy cut-outs of themselves to highlight the vulgar, if wonderful, puppetry they represent. The concept allows for amateurish realization, so, benefit of the doubt, there… Happily, it also calls for brevity! Somewhere between forgivable and well done. 2.5
