Filled with 80s! I got the butterflies when I faced the perilous, but alluring night of NY with jaunty rhythm music of synthesizer. The glare of neon lights, strippers, the marshal-arts expert, the agent who was once pro boxer and of course had killed his opponents in the match, all stand out as a character which embody the atmosphere of the smell and taste of good old 80s. A lovable B-class movie.
Considered 'hit or miss' and a cult classic, it was a real miss for me. Once you get past the nostalgia factor (shouldn't last longer that the hideously 80's opening credits), there isn't much there. Could be funny if it were made now as an homage to 80's thrillers, but it wasn't. It was made then and is much less funny. Helps explain why Billy Dee Williams disappeared by 1985 (okay, he was in Batman in '89).
Interesting mixture of action, noir, "kung-fu", gangsters; all flavoured with the 80's magic. It's not easy to rate this film for me: on the one hand it has dated quite badly, but on the other it's a statement of its time... I loved the colours, the analogue cinematography, and the cast. Overall, it's a mixed bag; but if you forgive it the silly storyline, this film can be enjoyable!
First: doesn't Berenger (that hair!) look more than a little like Robert Pollard, frontman of Guided by Voices? As Hollywood would have him (not that this is Hollywood, like, at all). Dumb muscle and thoughtless action. This guy is an unforgivable, reckless lunkhead. This world is total sleaze. The movie relishes sleaze. Sleaze is its selling point. This is actually a delirious collection of really dire symptoms.
(1.5 stars) Melanie Griffith is THE worst bigger named actress who has slept her way to her semi-fame (true story). And she's just as awful here as she is in any movie she's in. I understand that people may have a guilty pleasure liking of this film, but it is not a good movie. Not at all. Only Billy Dee is worth watching. He is always one cool cat. “There’s nothing I hate more than Guineas in Cadillacs.”
