From the first scene of a woman in the woods, to the landscape of Madeira - beautiful, erotic and charged with a sense of authenticity and horror. Like a bird suspended motionless above the sea, from a cliff - the current of tension between life and death, woven with human sexuality - a still point to which the film returns. Wait a minute. That seagull was a bird a minute ago. Why is it a bat now? I don't care.
Just like the next person I love vampire movies, but this movie came close to me never watching them again. I felt as if I were trapped in a horrible seventies porn. I get it sex sells but this movie needed more than just sex to sell it. The graphics were terrible not to mention the camera movements needed a lot of work. I would not recommend this movie to anyone at any time.
If you cut all the boring and repetitive sex sequences (I think one man and one woman would be enough) you might get an interesting and atmospheric short film. But you should also change the creepy music because it's hard to bear... like the blind Dr. Roberts touching the vagina of a dead woman to determine that she was killed by a vampire.
1-2. Uh, okay. I might not write this film off entirely. It does deserve at least one star for atmosphere, and something of an intriguing theme emerges by the end. But mostly it's just a long string of sex scenes tied together by a physically underdeveloped storyline about an investigator pursuing a vampire. In summation, I very much doubt I'd give this a second watch.
If you look at it from a post pornal point of view there are certain things you can appreciate, given the constraints of trying to make over 200 films. There's a certain freedom in first take only take filming that reminds one of Rohmer. And of course there's the mouthal expressions of a mute woman attempting to communicate her cognitive dissonance. Not one of his best.
This used to be my least favourite Franco film but I've come to appreciate it over time. Despite the rough and cheap shooting, it has a gentle atmosphere thanks to the sentimental music and the magical Madeira scenery. If vampires sucking semen aren't your thing, there's also Erotikill, the alternate blood version which runs shorter.
