Brimming with all the things that made the Czechoslovak films of this era so glorious: madcap comedy, pictorial beauty, old world charm, a healthy sex drive, and a hearty anarchic spirit. What a pity its director died, age 36, shortly after making this, only his second film.
The alienation of the war returned veterans is religious,social,professional and personal.Reminiscent of, though very different in its historical context,the protagonist in 'Return of the prodigal son' or 'The Fire within'.The lovely countryside reminds you of 'Intimate Lighting' or 'Pastorali'. Recollection of war, the poetic finale of death, the magic of flute etc. are a peek into Havetta's last preoccupations.
