While there is certainly a powerful lead performance, and some fantastic action sequences, this film is distractingly (frustratingly) loyalist. All the IRA men are, as expected, ignorant and brutally violent while the unionist officers are all just misunderstood and trying to help. Director Skogland, a Canadian woman with seemingly no understanding of the issues at hand, was not the best choice for this project.
Works well as a gripping action thriller, but politically is more pro British in its inside look at the 1980's Northern Ireland conflict. Ben Kingsley and Jim Sturgess are excellent in their scenes together.
