Too Jewish! That's what most of my Jewish friends said, and it certainly helps to understand this film if you are familiar with the Haredi community and their interpretation of halacha. I am familiar with it, and I found this film to be a very thoughtful, objective look at the sensitive topic of arranged marriages, even though the film was made by a Haredi woman. Extremely well- done debut by Gveret Burshtein.
Embraces marriage in an orthodox Hasidic community in Israel with extreme sensibility and in a non-intrusive way, putting a whirl of complex emotions in each character. Review and Rating: http://alwayswatchgoodmovies.blogspot.com/2013/05/fill-void-2012.html
Small in stature and execution but a worthy gem regardless from first time filmmaker Rama Burshtein. The film provides a glimpse into an Orthodox Hassidic family; their beliefs, their tradtions; their sense of family and marriage above all else to praise God. Yet the film does seem to universal in some ways in its look at arranged marriages and familial responsibilities. The film avoids the saccharine thankfully.
The film gives you an insight into the Hasidi Jewish community but I wish I could have learnt a bit more. A family puts pressure on a young woman to marry the husband of her deceased sister so that her child can stay in the country. Fortunately, there is a happy ending...
Explores an interesting world and has a solid cast, but this is a formulaic story sculpted without much technical proficiency, especially when it comes to the cinematography—shoddy work by the DP and/or focus puller. Some shots are randomly out of focus (or damaged by distractingly shallow depth of field), and the intermittent use of soft lighting is poorly integrated and seemingly without purpose.
