I watched this months ago but all I can remember is finding the portrait of an incredibly sharp guy underneath the layers of gaudiness and expected sleaziness. A lot of his shortcomings seemed to be glazed over and I would've liked to see more on the Caligula trainwreck.
Ater winning documentaries on entertainment figures including Weinstein and Drabinsky, Avrich turns his lens on Guccione with lesser results. Sometimes feeling like a 'Saint Bob' biopic this film feels somewhat unrealized and either needed to be much longer or much more specific. The hubris of this self made 'roman God' is awe inspiring and more information about 'Caligula' and his downfall would have been in order.
