Absolutely amazing. But the most mindboggling thing is that it was made in 1947. Stalin was still in power and Israel hadn't been created out of scorched land, yet Kenneth was already getting down with blood, milk and zaddies in uniform. Remains transgressive in the US of puritanism in 2018. <3
3-4. An interesting 'psychological dream' short that experiments with blending pleasure and pain subtly (cigarettes) and overtly (ogling mixed with slapping, punching, etc.). It's extremely well-shot, running to the depths of the self-destructive impulse at the heart of BDSM, and landing some intriguing (and occasionally oddly comical) evocations, such as using milk to suggest semen, a libidinous firework, etc.
This film changed my enthusiasm for genre of experimental films from modest and curious to fucking high almighty, this film is spastic and shaped the underground. It makes no matter if you haven't seen all his films, this is the masterpiece he made in his early career. Plus the backstory of how this was made is amazing, seeing this film at the age that he made it shocked and inspired me. One lucrative fantasy film.
I can appreciate this film, knowing how young was Kenneth Anger when he made it and how brave it was to make a film like this in 1947. Nevertheless, in 2014 it doesn't astonish me. It must've grown old too much. Anyway, fireworks in man's flies or a little figurine as a morning wood are not my thing.
An astonishingly asured masochistic masturbatory fantasy full of potent gay imagery. All deeply personal for the young Anger but the common currency of motifs - aided and abetted by this very film - still chimes across the years with its themes of repressed violence: enjoyed and endured.
Kenneth Anger's gay film experiment is tremendous and unforgettable, the work of a true artist in the medium, making it even more astonishing that he was only 17 when he put this together. Most young filmmakers are dicking around with equipment at that age, whereas Anger was able to lay bare his very soul in ways that most seasoned veterans only dream of.
