Yeh Hung-Wei Taiwan, 1990

Karl J. Kipling's rating of the film Five Girls and a Rope

Bleak Taiwanese film about five teenage farm girls, each of whom have witnessed something horrible happen to female family members, who make a pact to hang themselves while still virgins on an auspicious day because they think they'll go to heaven. One could quibble that the oppressed woman theme is hammered here a touch too monotonously, but the film has several disturbingly memorable scenes and packs a punch.
