If one can get past the "Soviet" elements (cheerful miners work for the Motherland, a Christian cult reads a Russian Bible "Printed in New York, USA" and claim that God demands blood sacrifices) one can see the germ of Parajanov's masterpiece SHADOWS here: the wild camerawork, the occasional foray into surrealism show a director chafing at convention. A mere two years later the lid's blown completely off.
