The football betting scenes are the clear highlight.
The rest is an empty, unfocused (hah) film that has no clear direction. Just where were they going with this story? And then the last scene throws three plot twists that are so convoluted the respective characters have to explain it to you with a montage. And it's still stupid. It wants to be cool and sleek so much. It's not. At least Will Smith had fun, I guess.
I admit that "Focus" is not a great film, with it's big plot twists pushing the boundaries of believability WAY too far. But, I still couldn't help but enjoy it. Will Smith and Margot Robbie play well off each other and the plot (when it's on track) keeps you invested. It's fun and there's nothing wrong with that.
Will and Margot play fine their characters, but the story doesn't have any proper direction established. It actually feels like the story is kinda "forced" sometimes. Anyways, 2 stars thanks to Dead Combo playing.
It wants to be multi-layered - heists within heists within heists - and it is certainly slick, well photographed, fast paced and with lots of nods to the past. Great fun. A hypnotist's onion of a film: as you consume it it seems like a really juicy apple, but then when you wake at the end and consider what just went on, you are left with onion breath...
Pretty people in pretty panoplies at pretty places do dirty deeds. They're stealing from mostly innocent people though so I never cared too much about what happened to Smith and Robbie. Focus is a romantic comedy at heart. Directors Ficarra and Requa probably watched Out of Sight too often. Not as smart or edgy as it could've been, but it's easy breezy fun if you go in with low expectations.
