After betraying his social class, denying his peasant roots and fleeing his native village, Ahmed has become a successful businessman and has found a place in the sun among the bourgeoisie. Azem, his childhood friend, has followed a quite different way.

The weakest Güney film I've seen. Understandable is the intention to capture Turkey's modernization and the youth's vulnerability to all sorts of libertinisms and emancipations that stand for lack of character in a bourgeois urban setting that subsumes village life under the 'tourist' gaze. Yet, Güney's film succumbs to stereotypical and languid moralizing and patronizes both youth and spectators. Disappointed.
Arkadaş is a very didactical film interwoven with dualist expressions and streotypes. Characters lack in dimensionality. Scenerio is weak. However, shooting a political movie in Turkey, especially in those times; 70s, required courage. Yılmaz Güney impressed me for that reason. If you want to sense zeitgeist of the leftist politics in Turkey, you should watch Arkadaş.
